Skylark/Slowlark – Karina Rykman

One of the beauties of having a big playlist is that you can hit the “play random” button and let some kind of synchronicity deliver tunes you may not have known that you needed at the moment.

Today, as a perfect example,  the first song I got was Skylark/Slowlark by Karina Rykman’s 2023 album Joyride.

Karina is a NYC-based singer and bass player who fronts a very tight band playing funk, rock, jazz, and psychedelic jams.  Their live shows are always a party.

Skylark/Slowlark is a mostly instrumental, jazz-inspired jam that alternatively features the high-charged guitar work of Adam November, the layered drum work of Chris Corso, and Karina’s  smooth bass runs.   It is not their most representative song, but it is one of my favorites, and I love when it comes on the shuffle.

This morning, it got me in a groovy and productive mood to start the day.

Karina Rykman is playing at The Independent in San Francisco on Saturday, November 7th and you will surely find me there.
