So the kids, they dance, they shake their bones And the politicians throwing stones Singing, “Ashes, ashes all fall down”
It has always struck me as interesting that Halloween precedes, in such close proximity, Election Day in the United States. As a culture we really love to conjure up anxiety and fear and this juxtaposition somehow amplifies all that.
Throwing Stones is one of the most overtly political songs by the Grateful Dead. It paints a picture of humanity on fragile spinning ball, caught up in petty wars, addictions, and greed fomented by cynical politicians. John Perry Barlow writes, true to his Libertarian leanings, that hope lies in the collective “us.” In the kids who dance and shake their bones.
So go out and get your ghoul on, and then on Tuesday vote the damn fools out.
